Question of the Day (5-Jan)

What's up people?

Hope you've all welcomed the new year with positivity. Don't wanna take too much from the Hubies, but digg.....
I happened to be checking out that show Extreme Makeover Home Edition, right. And I got to thinking. All over the country, they are throwing up buildings, apartments, and homes like it's nothing. And it's all done in a very short period of time. Now, I've never built a house, but I've helped rebuild one. I'm not an architect or a mason, but I do know the materials used today are sub-par to those from years ago. (Just like cars with fiberglass vs. metal). And from what I've seen over the last few years, structures today are not nearly as sturdy as they were just 30+ years ago or more. And I know that on this show they have a team full of people put together to build a home, but how do you build a house in a week?

I'm just saying. I've seen homes built less than five years ago and now they are falling apart and/or termite ridden. What's up with that?

there is a lot less skill employed by builders (it's not a father son pass down trade any more), and it is all about cheap, quick labor with disregard for quality results, like most things in our lives now, including food.
people will also say that the cost of material has gone up (why you'll see some solid marble columns in St. John the Divine but in their replacements ones where they had a fire, they have a cheaper core).
anyway, I know you know this, don't know why I am so serious about it except that you touch upon a big problem we have now: quick, cheap, fast, consume, consume, consume. who cares about quality (we are sold)?

So true--in Ga. the will build your house in 30-45dyas!!! Ten to fifteen years later the homes look like they need to be demolished!Buy brick--it fronts well!

Wait... do they actually build these homes from the ground up? Or is it that they do major renovations within a foundation that has already been laid? In any event, I'm jealous. I want some new shyt too.

It's quantity over quality. Developers want to build as many houses as they can at the cheapest cost allowed by law. What I want to know is how all of these $300K - $500K houses are being bought by people. That may seem like nothing to people in other areas, but that's really big money in GA. Folks get tricked into a house they can't afford and like Big Reub said...they are not even built that well...
