Can anyone tell me why The Golden Globes even exist?

While I watch The Golden Globes I have to ask myself one question: Why are these awards even around? This show and it's group The Hollywood Foreign Press are so fake and transparent in it's unnecessaryness that I wonder why anyone even bothers to give it merit. The H.F.P are basically three people with a laptop and a handheld video camera calling the shots and swaying voters' opinions. It's a Bullshit awards program.
